We carry out a wide range of drainage work across Kent, and pond emptying comes up more often than you might expect. Whether it’s ahead of a full pond renovation or routine maintenance, getting the water out safely — without causing problems elsewhere in the garden — takes a bit of planning. This job in Rochdale was a good example of that.
What the client needed
The client had a garden pond that needed emptying fully so they could carry out maintenance and some planned landscaping work. The pond held a significant volume of water, and it had been sitting for some time, so there was a layer of sludge and debris at the bottom on top of the standing water.
The main concern — and it’s a fair one — was where all that water was going to go. The garden had paving, a lawn, and planted borders close by. Emptying a pond without a proper discharge plan can easily cause localised flooding, damage turf, or wash out planting. None of that was acceptable here, and rightly so.
How we approached it
Before we started pumping, we walked the garden and identified a suitable drainage point at a safe distance from the pond. The route there needed to be planned carefully — there was a reasonable stretch of garden between the water and the outlet, and we needed the hose secured and clear of any trip hazards or areas where movement could cause a kink.
We set up a professional-grade submersible pump directly in the pond and connected an extended discharge hose, routing it across the garden to the identified drainage point. Once running, we monitored the pump continuously to keep an eye on flow rate, water levels, and whether anything was backing up at the discharge end.
As the water level dropped, the remaining sludge and debris at the base of the pond became more manageable, and we were able to assist in clearing that as part of the process.
The result
The pond was emptied in a controlled, efficient manner without any flooding to the surrounding garden. The paving stayed clean, the lawn was unaffected, and the planted areas around the pond were untouched. Once the work was done, we cleared up and left the site tidy.
